The Lure of La Serenissima

Venezia — For me, Venice is more like a sense of being than a place. La Serenissima, as she is called, is a sense of place embodied.  The most sensual of all cities I’ve travelled to, Venezia is fluid and velvety, elegant and knowing, and each time I go I never want to leave.  When I’m there I feel as if I am cheating on Rome; I’ve declared my love to the Eternal City one thousand times over, have paid in blood and tears as proof of my loyalty, but then gliding along the soothing waterways, the Venetian light casts a glassy spell, and I set to making plans to stay.
